Why Graduates Aren’t Ready for Work

This paper explores the growing disconnect between higher education and workforce readiness among Filipino college graduates. Despite completing academic programs, many graduates struggle to secure jobs that match their qualifications, often entering low-paying roles or remaining unemployed. Drawing from recent data and cultural insights, the study highlights key factors contributing to this employment gap: societal pressure to find immediate work, limited quality job opportunities, a preference for experienced hires, and the enduring influence of social connections over merit. Additionally, it examines how rigid educational systems—still focused on rote memorization—fail to equip students with essential soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. The paper calls for reforms that include stronger industry-academic linkages, curriculum alignment with market needs, and a shift in societal values that recognizes the dignity of all forms of honest work. Ultimately, it advocates for a more inclusive and skills-oriented education-to-employment pathway to ensure Filipino graduates are not just credentialed, but genuinely career-ready.
